Nigerians, other to pay N750,000 Bond for UK Entry

CITIZENS of Nigerian and some developing countries in Africa and Asia seeking entry into the United Kingdom will from November this year begin the payment of bond.

According to reports, the N750,000 bond, which will be paid in cash, will serve as a security against foreigners living in the country illegally after the expiration of their visas. Visitors will lose the bond payment only when they overstay their visas.

The UK Home Secretary, Theresa May, was quoted as saying that the bond would go a long way in recovering costs incurred by foreign nationals who enjoy public services in the country when they overstay their visas.

Bruins Beat Blackhawks 2-0, Lead Cup Finals 2-1

Tuukka Rask shut out the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals on Monday night and got enough help from the Bruins' offense to do it without another exhausting overtime.
After playing four extra periods in the first two games, the Bruins made an early night of it with second-period goals by Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron to win 2-0 and take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup finals.
Rask stopped 28 shots for his third shutout of the 2013 playoffs.
Corey Crawford made 33 saves for the Blackhawks.

Game 4 is Wednesday night in Boston before the matchup of Original Six teams returns to Chicago for a fifth game. The teams split the first two games there, with the Blackhawks winning Game 1 in triple-overtime and the Bruins stealing home-ice advantage on Paille's goal in the first OT of the second game.
But this time the intrigue came before the opening faceoff instead of after the end of regulation.
Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara and Chicago forward Marian Hossa were both injured during warmups. But while Chara needed just some stitches after his collision with teammate Milan Lucic, Hossa was a late scratch with an unspecified injury.

Hossa, who has three game-winning goals in the playoffs this year, was tied for the team lead with 15 playoff points and was third on the Blackhawks with 17 goals during the regular season.
It was a loss the Blackhawks couldn't afford.
Not with Rask stopping everything that came his way.

How Nigerian Celebrities Are Killing Themselves

Apparently basking in the euphoria of a new status, many Nigerians in showbiz throw caution in the wind in the process of “living it up”. These days, hardly does a month end without news of someone in Nollywood or the Music industry, getting involved in car accident or public brawl...

This comes as no surprise, especially to those who are in the know of the background of today’s stars. Most of them, even in wildest dreams, never thought they would attain their current standing in the society. In fact, not only do they talk about the rise to fame in interviews, they also author books and record songs on it.

It is worrisome that the mints these guys stack in bank accounts have overwhelmed them, so much that some can no longer think properly. In 2013 alone, there have been at least a dozen auto crash involving celebrities. On the average, that is a scary 2 to 3 cases per month. Names like Samklef, Danagog, Maye Hunter, America, Nashville, Asa and others form the lot.

The most recent involving fabulously talented Ayo “Wizkid” Balogun, rattled virtually every music lover; this is because the young man is adored by the younger generation.

The 23-year old has everything going on well. Good looks, sold out concerts, record sales, endorsement for big-paying coys, successful international tours, connection to foreign superstars, huge fan base, that feminine attraction, houses and expensive cars, what is more? He now has his record label, StarBoy Entertainment, with three acts including Legendary Beatz signed on.

Weeks ago, the "I Love My Baby" and "Pakurumo" crooner posted a picture of his newly acquired Porsche Panamera. The car is priced at $80, 000 – $150, 000 (depending on the sub-model). As expected, the photo went viral on social media. But by 0400 hours of Saturday June 15, 2013, the same car had become a wreck. The gist – as always – is that a tyre of the automobile burst while on motion.

While we all thank God for sparing the lives of our stars, isn’t it time we ask some questions. Bearing in mind the busy schedules, why would someone driving a car worth N15million not take such for regular checks? Or are expensive cars immune from faults?

It is an open secret that our acts, and their entourage, sometimes use “active agents” before and after attending/performing at events. It is also an open secret these artistes or their friends sometimes get behind the wheels under the influence of alcohol. But nobody is saying anything, solely because of the blind love we have for them. I am not saying this happened in the case of Wizzy, but it does happen.

Some find the demise of celebrities too hard to bear. This is understandable, as despite harsh government policies and dwindling economy, they are able to make us happy; they put smile on our faces; they liven up our homes, streets, vehicles, clubs and parties and so on.

Our celebrities have a responsibility to look after themselves and not live life like there is a duplicate kept somewhere. They should for goodness sake be more careful while on the road; they should ensure those around them are the type that of positive influence; they should do away with hard drugs and excessive alcohol; they should reciprocate our affection by staying focused and do only the right things at all times. These crashes are becoming too many; we don’t want to pass through another agony please!

If you think you are popular and then go about ‘feeling fly’, the day you die an avoidable death, your name will trend for a few days; news sites and blogs will as usual talk about it for, at most, two weeks. The rest of us will move on. Live continues. Chikena.

It has been a gruelling six weeks of twists and turns, intrigues and suspense, and finally the people have spoken and we have our women selected to stand the test for this year’s Sexiest in Nollywood ‘Quest’.
Vanguard has had no hands in the selection process except in compilation of votes which have been sent in. If truly beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, then the readers who have come up with these 25 remarkable women in Nollywood have got their task spot on.

Behold the twenty five that will go to the distance are Colette Orji, Uche Jombo, Ebube Nwagbo, Anita Joseph, Queeneth Hilbert, Queen Nwokoye, Rita Dominic, Biodun Okewo, Stephanie Okereke, Jackie Appiah, Tonto Dikeh, Nadia Buari, Yvonne Nelson, Uche Iwuji, Maureen Cyril, Cynthia Agholor, Yvonne Okoro, Nuella Njubigbo, Amanda Ebeye
Ejiro Okurame, Chika Agatha, Angela Okorie, Chitta Agwu, Damilola Adegbite and Tope Osoba
As it was made clear from the beginning of the ‘quest’: every man and woman who acts in Nollywood has eligibility to be voted, with exception of only those stars who have been past winners of the quest.
It would be recalled that Genevieve Nnaji and Jim Iyke won the maiden edition in 2009 as the Sexiest Woman and Sexiest Man respectively. In 2010, the stakes got higher and we had several categories included in the ‘Quest’. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Desmond Elliot emerged the Sexiest man and woman respectively for 2010.
Other winners who emerged from the categories include Mercy Johnson, Chioma Chukwuka- Akpotha, Chidi Mokeme, Yemi Blaq, Nonso Diobi, RMD, Ini Edo, Emeka Ike and Chike Ike. All these people are not eligible to participate in this year’s edition.

What do men and women want from each other?

I had the good fortune to celebrate a wedding anniversary and birthday last weekend. The former was a quarter of a century and twelve moons as a dear friend so beautifully put it in a card and the latter was five decades and a half.  While the numbers are a little unnerving, they are certainly something to be very proud of.
Gloria Ogunbadejo
What is even more significant to me is that I can still remember the emotions I felt on  the day I got married and comparing it to how I feel today about my spouse, the only difference is in the depth, quality and understanding, all of which are much richer, heightened and of a superior quality. I find this indeed something to celebrate. People tend to ask couples who have been married for long periods what their secrets are. I always find it an odd question because by virtue of the word secret, that would suggest it is not something you want to share. Besides, one couple’s successful ingredients may not work for another couple.

Chelsea Agree £49m Edinson Cavani Fee: Blues Win Race to Sign Uruguayan International According to Italian Source

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a fee to sign Napoli striker Edinson Cavani according to Italian source SportMediaSet.

Having failed in earlier attempts to use Fernando Torres as a makeweight in any move to sign the in-form Uruguayan Chelsea have now apparently stumped up the cash to meet the 26 year old’s release clause, said to be €58m (£49m).

Stamford Bridge side set bring in Napoli ace.

Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich has been keen to land a prolific marksman and according to this source has beaten off interest from Real Madrid and Man City.
Personal terms are yet to be agreed with the former Palermo forward but Cavani is said to be a big admirer of Jose Mourinho and as such could well assist in seeing a deal completed.
Real Madrid had similarly looked to use squad players in part exchange for the Napoli goal machine and Man City have fallen behind in the race due to having not officially brought in a successor to replace Roberto Mancini.

With Torres continuing to fail to deliver the goods, managing just eight Premier League goals in 2012/13, and Demba Ba also struggling for form, the West London club could well do with an effective forward to feed off creative talents like Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata.
Cavani finished last season as the top scorer in Serie A and has scored an astonishing 104 goals in 138 appearances for Napoli since moving to the San Paolo in July 2010.

Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois to join Atletico Madrid on loan for a third time

Chelsea's young Belgian goalkeeper Thiabaut Courtois has confirmed that he will return to Atletico Madrid on loan for another season.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has announced that he will return to Atletico Madrid on loan for another season.

Courtois, who is first choice goalkeeper for Belgium, has been on loan at Atleti for the past two seasons since he moved to the Blues from Racing Genk, as Chelsea have continued with Petr Cech in goal.
Speculation has long mounted on when the young Belgian will replace Cech as Chelsea number one, although there were some suggestions that the keeper had been offered to Napoli as a makeweight in a deal for Edinson Cavani as his future at the club was called into question.

Death toll rises to 6 in Philadelphia building collapse

 Fox news item:

At least six people are dead and 14 others are injured after a four-story building being demolished in downtown Philadelphia suddenly collapsed, Mayor Michael Nutter said late Wednesday.
Early reports had been that one woman had died in the Wednesday morning accident, but rescuers using buckets and their bare hands to move bricks and rubble kept working through the evening.
Body bags were removed from the collapse site at night, and authorities then turned off the floodlights that had lit it. Nutter said the city's emergency workers had been "diligent, determined, focused" in their rescue efforts.

"If anyone else is in that building, they will find them," he said.
A 14th survivor was pulled from the rubble early Thursday. Deputy Fire Chief Robert Coyne said 61-year-old Myra Plekam was pulled from the debris more than 12 hours after a building collapsed and that she was awake and talking to rescuers.
At least 13 other people were hospitalized at nearby trauma centers with minor injuries and listed in stable condition.
